Next stop: Portland and roommates

It doesn’t look like it but my old wooden dresser fits perfectly in the back seat of my 99 Nissan.  I know this because, ironically, the thing has been in my car on the highway more times than I can count.

In just the past two years it has bounced it’s way to five different locations and today my dresser found itself nestled against the wall of our sixth home since my return stateside.

That’s right, soon my dresser and I will be living in the heart of Portland with two roommates.

Living with two roommates in the biggest city in Maine?  That sounds suspiciously like a college student’s life you say? I am not, however, an undergrad.

No, no, in fact, last month I actually celebrated my 29th birthday and like most things I thought would happen in my life by now that haven’t my living situation is no different.  It’s hard not to consider that of my three best friends two are married and one is living with a long-time boyfriend.  Not to mention, most people my age are all doing the same thing, lots of them with toddlers running around, too (yikes).

Some days I let this get to me (I mean, seriously Danielle, moving in with roommates? And don’t even get me started on your career path thus far!).

But most days I realize that I am not “most” people my age.  I chose a different route after college and wouldn’t change my experiences for any of those “normal” expectations I had as a kid.  Am I happy right now? Yes.  At least more often than not and that’s all that’s supposed to matter, right?

And truthfully, the things that my friends have are all beautiful and great but they are not things that would fit into my life right now.  You know what else doesn’t fit?  A one-bedroom apartment rent check.
So, here I come Portland.  I very honestly, wholeheartedly, and eagerly look forward to the things you have in store for me.

About Danielle Clark

I am 28 years old and for 5 years out of college I played basketball for a living. I was a professional basketball player in Europe so I spent most of my years there and came back to Maine for summers and a couple weeks at Christmas time. I thought my years there would open my eyes to what I want to be when I "grow up." That didn't happen. I have discovered, however, that I just have to try something. Just do things and toss myself into them. I have currently tossed myself into being a college basketball assistant coach and one on one reading tutor. I grew up in Corinna, Maine and have been a resident Mainer. I love sports, reading, writing, cooking, baking, watching movies... everything. I have lots of hobbies and not enough time in the day!
